Activities Unlimited: Empowering Young People with SEND Through Gym-Based Physical Activity

I supported many young people to engage in physical activity prior to launching this organisation, but certainly in the past 2 years I have witnessed literally hundreds of young people engage in physical activity, in different ways but each story as inspiring as the last.

By providing inclusive, supportive, and engaging physical activity sessions that cater to the unique needs of each individual, I am witnessing the power of physical activity to transform lives, especially for young people with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND).

In April I launched a project for gym-based physical activity sessions specifically designed for young people with SEND.

The session design is based on our popular online Fun-Fit Club, but offering an in-person physical activity session for this, held every Wednesday at the Therapy Gym in Holton St Mary.

4.00pm - 5-11 years

5.00pm - 11-17 years

The sessions run each week and are free to attend six times, supported by Activities Unlimited and delivered by myself and Tamara who also works on the virtual Fun-Fit Club sessions.

Why Physical Activity Matters for Young People with SEND

Physical activity offers many benefits for young people, particularly those with SEND. Engaging in regular exercise can improve physical fitness, enhance social skills, boost self-esteem, and support mental well-being. Structured and fun physical activities like the Fun-Fit Club boosts engagements and created achievements.

Importantly, these sessions are delivered in a safe and welcoming environment where young people with SEND can thrive.

A Closer Look at Our Gym-Based Sessions

Our gym-based physical activity sessions at the Therapy Gym in Holton St Mary, suffolk are tailored to cater to different age groups, ensuring that each session is developmentally appropriate and meets the specific needs of the participants.

  • For ages 5-11: The session begins at 4:00 pm and is designed to be fun and engaging, incorporating a variety of games and exercises that promote physical fitness, coordination, and motor skills. Our experienced instructors create a supportive atmosphere where younger children can explore their physical abilities, build confidence, and make new friends. Enjoy obstacle courses, ball games, light reaction games and parachute fun.

  • For ages 11-17: Starting at 5:00 pm, this session is aimed at older children and teenagers. It offers a fun approach to physical activity, with a focus on building strength, endurance, and overall fitness. Participants are encouraged to set personal goals and work towards achieving them. Enjoy rowing, cycling, running and boxing along with fun games for engagement.

What Makes the in-person Fun-Fit Club Sessions Unique?

  2. Understanding Instructors: All sessions are led by instructors with experience in working with young people with SEND. They are trained to provide the necessary support and encouragement, ensuring each participant feels comfortable and safe.

  3. Suitable Activities: We make the activities suit the abilities and interests of each participant. Whether it’s a fun game, a challenging obstacle course, or a group exercise, the aim is to keep everyone engaged and motivated.

  4. Developmental Benefits: The Therapy Gym is equipped with equipment designed to support the physical development of young people with SEND. The sessions not only focus on fitness but also incorporate developmental based exercises that can improve mobility, balance, and coordination.
